Title - Creating Your Own Fantasy Story
By - Marissa Marler
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 6-12

Directions:
The student will review the characteristics of fantasy literature. Next, they will choose one element from each list in order to compose their own fantasy story plotline. They will also choose a hero name and explain why they chose this name for their main character in the story. They could also choose their major power and lesser power in the story. This would help stimulate their minds in order to formulate a plot line. For the assignment, have the students incorporate at least eight of the elements they have chosen and design a story that is in the genre of fantasy. They will not need to write the story, but rather formulate a couple sentences that explain the major setting, characters, motives, plotline, etc. This is to ensure that they know what fantasy literature is composed of.

  1. My hero’s name: ________________________________

    What does this mean?
    ______________________________________________________
Why did you choose this name?
    ______________________________________________________

  2. Greatest power/deity present in your story: ________________________________

  3. Lesser Powers/Power of Persuasion: ______________________________________

Now look over all of your selections. Your challenge is to create a plotline involving all of your characters, setting, and themes! You do not have to write an actual story; instead, you should incorporate ALL or eight out of the 12 elements you have chosen! Be creative - nothing is too "stupid." In order for this plot line to be considered developed enough, you should have at least three sentences - but make sure you have included all of your information!
