Title - Fun with Fragments
By - Allison
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - 6-9
Objective: Students will be able to identify and correct sentence fragments

Materials needed: pre-selected magazine advertisements, one for each student or else the kids can work in pairs. Find ads from magazines students are familiar with like Teen/Seventeen/Mademoiselle/TeenPeople/etc. For instance, one ad showed Jennifer Love Hewitt in a Neutrogena advertisement for shampoo. The words were, "Lots of shine." "One thousand beautiful strands." "No fuss." See? They are all fragments and ads like this are SO easy to find.

Pass out the ads in class. Give the students some time to find/identify the fragment. Tell them to find a way to correct the fragment. Then have each student stand up and explain what the advertisement is for. The student then reads the fragment, and then reads the correction. Make sure that each presentation involves a different advertisement. In a class of 30, you could put the kids into pairs and only use 15 different ads from magazines. It sounds like a lot to have to find, but trust me, it is easy! (I found 20 in only 4 magazines)!
