Title - Interactive Lesson for Teaching Themes
By - Beth Thomas
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 1-12
Materials:
- Digital camera
- Disk
- Themes from novel
Objective:
To demonstrate understanding of themes kinesthetically
Procedure:
Warm-up:
- Atom/Freeze/Partner (AFP) - students will walk around the room without touching anyone and then students will freeze and find a partner.
- Staring game - students will then stare at the partner and not look away until the teacher directs them.
- Mirrors - students will mirror their partners. They must stay in place and use only one hand and any body movements. This helps to gain bonding and trust with partner for future assignment.
- Atom/Freeze/Partner (AFP) again.
- Students will then high-five partner, touch partner’s shoe with shoe, and then bump butts (continue for four rounds).
- AFP again, then strike a pose - one person is 'A' and the other is 'B'. The 'A's will get into a comfortable position and then 'B's will mold them into a new position. 'A's will continue to freeze. Then, 'B's will move around and remold someone new, as the 'A's continue to freeze. (Teacher will be taking digital pictures.)
Theme Work:
- Group pose - the teacher will call out an idea and the students will represent that idea by making a picture with their bodies. Teacher will call out themes/major ideas from the novel. (Teacher will take pictures again.)
- Dream come true
- Rejection of society
- Death
- Love
- Class pose - love and death
(Teacher takes pictures.)
