Here students can practice their foreign language vocabulary while playing baseball

- The object of this lesson is for students to practice vocabulary, verb conjugations and sentence formation in an oral and aural situation.
- Note cards for the vocabulary. English on one side, Spanish on the other.
- Note cards for each one of the pronouns.
- Chalkboard/whiteboard; chalk; whiteboard markers
- Divide the class into two teams. Call them Equipo Uno y Equipo Dos, or whatever you’d like in the target language that will help them learn more words. Primer Equipo, Segundo Equipo etc.
- Have the team write up a batter line-up.
- On the board, draw a baseball diamond. Using the target vocabulary, label home plate, first base, second base, and third base. Home plate is at the bottom, and the bases go from right to left.
- The runner can be depicted with a mark or a magnet that can be moved around the bases. If you use a magnet, you want two distinct looking magnets for each team.
- The teacher is the pitcher.
- Students cannot use their vocabulary list.
- There cannot be more than one runner on the field.
- Each batter gets the chance to advance the runner one base.
- You will pitch a word in English to the batter.
- The batter has to translate quickly.
- If they do not know the word within 5 seconds, they don’t know the word and they are out.
- If they say the word but it’s not pronounced correctly, let them know that the word is correct but the pronunciation is off. They have 3 chances, [3 strikes] to pronounce it correctly, otherwise they are out.
- If they know the word, and they pronounce it correctly, then they get to a base.
- They can steal a base, but first they must state that they want to steal a base. Then they can do one of the following things:
- Spell it aloud correctly.
- Spell it on paper correctly.
- If it’s a verb, they can choose a pronoun and conjugate the verb. It must be pronounced correctly. If they are unable to do this, they stay on the same base, if they get it correct, they can steal one base.
- They can get a homerun if they can use the word/verb in a sentence that is grammatically correct and complete. Otherwise they stay on the same base.
- If the team is able to get their runner all the way home, this earns them a point. If they have a runner on the field and they get three outs, well then there are no points.
- If you pitch a word, and the first batter doesn’t know it, then it goes to the next batter. Remember they are not allowed to disclose the answer to each other, give hints to each other, etc., otherwise it’s an out! If they do, then the batter whose turn it was loses his turn.
- Once the team makes three outs, the other team goes to bat, and the same word gets pitched to them. This is where the list comes in handy. The students cannot position themselves according to who knows the answer. Team two will now have the opportunity to make runs.
- If the opposing team doesn’t know the word either and they get 3 outs right away, then the same word goes back to the other team to the batter who was next. This again is where the list comes in handy.
- If either team is unable to get the word, and all the batters have gone up, then the word gets shown to the class and you can have the students write it down 10 times along with the translation or not.
- If the game has been explained to the class, you can quickly set up for it and play it the last 20 minutes or half hour of a class. If it’s the first time you play it, then you will need at least 15 minutes to explain the rules and get set up.
- You can alternate with Bingo and BÃƒÂ©isbol to study vocabulary.
