Students Create Their Own State Flag

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Standards:
113.4.b.14 Citizenship. The student understands important customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles and contribute to our national identity. The student is expected to:
(B) identify selected symbols such as state and national birds and flowers and patriotic symbols such as the U.S. and Texas flags and Uncle Sam; and
(C) explain how selected customs, symbols, and celebrations reflect an American love of individualism, inventiveness, and freedom.
Learning Objectives(s):
- Students will create their own state, name it and make up a flag.
- Students will be able to color their own flags and be creative.
- Students will be able to name U.S. states and know the flags for each state.
List of Materials Needed:
- Book
- Crayons
- Coloring paper
- Pencil
Pre-Activity Preparation:
No example or pattern needed.
Transition:
At first they can all get together so they could hear the story. Then students go back to their desks and the teacher hands out the materials.
Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:
“Today I’m going to read a book about America to you. Then you can do a fun activity about it. Are you ready for it?”
Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:
- Students will get out of their desk and move to the floor.
- The teacher will first talk about America.
- After the class talks about what America means to them, read the book America .
- After reading the book, ask questions to see if the students remember what the story was about.
- Next, they will move back in to their desk.
- The teacher passes out colors and paper.
- Then the teacher talks about what the lesson is about.
- Their homework is to name their own state and make up a flag for their state.
- The next day, the student will show their work to the class.
- The teacher will grade the work and then hang their art work in class.
Closure Questions:
- What was the story about?
- Can you name the states that we learned today?
- Do you known how many states there are in total?
