(A) describe the requirements of various jobs.

(1.11) Government. The student understands the role of authority figures and public officials. The student is expected to:
(C) identify the responsibilities of authority figures in the home, school, and community.

List of Materials Needed:

• Bingo cards with occupation names (20)
• Bingo chips (200+)
• Word cards
• Teacher created worksheet

Pre-Activity Preparation:

• Make bingo boards, a key, and a worksheet.
• The Bingo boards and chips must be set up before hand.

Transition:

• Stay at desk for the activity.
• Students will not need anything out.

Establish Set/ Motivation/Introduction:

“Do you guys like to play games? Well, today we are going to play Bingo, but in the way I like to play it – the social studies way!!! It’s a black out!!”

Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:

1. “Everyone tip toe to your seat (if sitting on carpet).”
2. “Remove everything from your desk.”
3. Ask students what comes to mind when you say the word “community.”
4. Write the correct definition of the word on the board: “a group of people living in one area.”
5. Ask students to name some community members they may know.
6. Warn students that when you pass out the boards and chips, “do not touch it or you will not be able to play.”
7. Teacher passes out the boards and chips.
8. Explain the rules when the students get quite.
   “I will give you a job or a explanation of what a person does. You will have the answer on your bingo card sheet. If I say, “I work at a doctor’s office” and you see “nurse” on your card, then that is your answer.”
9. “So, is everyone ready to play Bingo?”
10. “Pay attention, because at the end, I will give you a worksheet to fill out and it will be graded.”
11. “Stay in your seat, open your ears, and if you need me to repeat, raise your hand.”
12. “I will say the clue twice.”
13. Teacher will pull clue from the bag, say the description and wait for them to place chips on board. Repeat over and over until someone has a Bingo.
14. Make sure you walk around, just in case someone needs help.

3. What do the firefighters do?
4. What does a teacher do?
