This is a fun lesson on drawing portraits using chalk.
Anticipatory set: Discuss with students what portraits are and the medium. (Medium is the types of materials that are used to create art: ex. chalk, paint, crayons, glitter, paper, etc.) Show students different types of portraits made using different types of medium.
Materials: Different colors of chalk, water, sugar, bowls, and black construction paper.
Procedure: Tell the students that today they will be drawing portraits of a partner in their class. They will be using the medium – Chalk.
Step 1: Mix a high concentration of sugar and water. I would say about 1 tablespoon sugar to 1 cup water.
Step 2: Soak the chalk in the water for about 15 minutes prior to starting the Chalk Painting.
Step 3: Give each student a sheet of black construction paper. Facing each other, each partner will begin drawing a portrait of each other.
You will see how bight and beautiful the chalk paintings are. My 3rd graders loved this project.
Closing: Have each student share their portrait with the rest of the class. This would be a great getting to know you activity on the first day of school.
