Title – Mythology Dioramas

Concept/Goal: To explore the career of a Set Designer.
8.7 The students will identify and analyze the use of typography in the graphic arts.

Activity: Students will choose a Greek or Roman Myth to use as their focus for a three-dimensional model for one of the scenes.
Tools; Special Equipment; Supplies: Newsprint, mat board, markers, glue, scissors, exacto knives and blades, pencils, crayons, paint, odds and ends to add interest
Stage Setting (Set Design)- the arrangement of scenery and properties to represent the place where a play or movie is enacted
Myth- A traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the worldview of a people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or delineating the psychology, customs, or ideals of society.
Day One: I will talk about set design and look at a few different interpretations of the myth Icarus. I will talk about filling up the space, using foreground, middle ground, and background. We want things to show depth. We will start with four small sketches to work out our ideas and pick the most powerful way of getting our point across without giving away the ending to the myth.
Day Two: We will discuss what makes a design successful and we will look at a few examples of their work to critique. They should be starting on their three-dimensional production today. I will talk to them about tricks to make things stand up or stick out using strips of mat board and what things you may want to cut out of paper after drawing. Etc. Today our main focus will be how we are going to incorporate the title into our model for display. Reminder of color choices and detail will be important today.
Day Three: Students will continue working on their diorama. We will spend a few minutes making sure they understand how much should be in their open space and what “finished” consists of.
Day Four: This is the last day for working on these projects and we will have a critique the last 20 minutes of class to discuss the successes and failures if any. We will talk again about what makes a good design and what is most appealing to the eye.
