Monster Mash RSVP: Creating Halloween Party Invitations, Name Tags and Stickers
By Brad
Primary Subject: Computers
Grade Level:  4-7

Objective

Students will be able use a word processing program to create a set of Halloween party invitations, Halloween name tags and Halloween stickers

Materials Needed

  • Computer with Word or a similar word processing program
  • Color printer
  • Halloween clip art
  • Paper or card stock
  • Sheets of blank name tags
  • Sheets of blank stickers

Procedures

Explain to the class that today, you’re going to create invitations, name tags and stickers for a Halloween party. If this is an older grade, students can work by themselves. For a younger class, students can take turns on the computer while being assisted by the teacher.

Halloween Party Invitations

  • Have students open a new document in Word.
  • Instruct them to type in invitation details:

<Insert name here> invites you to the
Scariest Halloween Party
Of the Season!
Maybe a treat or even a trick or two… awaits you.
Remember to RSVP by
<Insert date here> to <insert name and number here>

  • Younger students can type the text they’re given, but encourage older students to write original invitations.
  • Once the text is finished and customized, ask the students to add Halloween clip art and choose a scary font style to match the Halloween theme.
  • If invitations are printing on plain paper, they might add a border design.
  • Ask students to save the file as “Halloween invitation” with their initials or name

Halloween Name Labels — Know your ghouls

  • Have students open a new Microsoft Word document
  • Instruct them to go to the Tools menu and find Envelopes and Labels
  • Have them choose the correct size for the name tag stickers
  • In the wizard, have students fill in names and add a little picture to finish of the look of the name labels.
  • Set the color of the font so that it will show clearly on the white name labels.
  • Save as “Halloween name labels”

Halloween Stickers — For party favors or prizes

  • Have students open a new document in Microsoft Word and go to the Tools menu and find Envelopes and Labels
  • Choose the correct size for the sticker labels; some sticker sheets have special layouts so students may need to set the margins.
  • Add Halloween clip art and maybe titles such as Best Costume, Scariest Witch, and so on
  • Set the color of the font so that it shows clearly on the sticker labels
  • Save project as “Halloween stickers”

Assessment

Students will be evaluated on completing the assignment and their creative participation.

Closure

All three projects may be printed out for each student or put on a jump drive for them to take home. Name tags and stickers might be worn or exchanged during a classroom Halloween celebration.
