Words per Minute Snake

Each class begin with a timed run, can be any amount of time. Have students calculate their own words per minute. Add these totals together and divide by the number of students in the class. For every 30 words per minute the class achieves, you will add a segment to the snake. Begin with the snake’s head on the board and add segments each class. The winning class or team will be the one with the longest snake by the end of the competition. This is a whole class competition that allows even the slowest typers to be able to contribute. You may choose to design your segments each class or have a collection of colored paper ones cut out. You could have specific students responsible for the making of, marking and attaching of the segments each class. I designed this for use with my grade 7 infotech class but it could be modified for use in different grades. It adds an element of fun while still pushing students to type faster.
