Distinguishing Earthquakes by Using Math Applications

Using the data provided by the teacher consisting of the date, city and state, and magnitude of the top 10 worst earthquakes in the United States history, students will graph the earthquakes by magnitude on a bar graph and then determine which earthquake had the highest magnitude and the lowest magnitude by using their completed bar graph to place the earthquakes in ascending order (#1 being the lowest magnitude and #10 being the highest magnitude). In order to further understand ascending and descending order, students will be given an activity to line up by being divided into two groups and each person will be given a large piece of paper with a number on it and then instructed to line up in ascending or descending order based on their numbers. Students will also calculate the mean, median, and mode based on the given data.
