Title – Analogies

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2-3

Analogies are probably one of the hardest things for the children in my classroom to grasp. This lesson will help this situation.

First, show the children an apple. Then hold up a red card. Take an orange and hold up the orange card. Then, tell the students that the color red is to an apple, as the color orange is to an orange. Then, write the analogy in written form on the board.

Apple is to red as orange is to orange.

Then show the students that the same thing can be written in a different way.

Apple:Red::Orange:Orange

Hopefully the students will be able to grasp this usage as well. Ask the students for further examples on analogies. Since this introduction was highly basic, challenge your students to think of more difficult examples. Also show the students ways to prove that an analogy is true by using:

    – Venn Diagrams

    – T-Charts

    – Showing the comparison ex: Apple (hold up apple)
