Title – Bananabooksplit

I am currently doing this with my high school age special needs students although it could be adapted for any age group.

This project is to encourage them to make use of the library and read books.

I cut out the basic shapes for a banana split, including the bowl, from construction paper. For each book a student reads and reports on, he/she receives 1 piece of the banana split starting with the bowl, then banana, scoops of ice cream, etc. We write the name of the book on each piece as they finish the book and then glue it to the rest of his/her paper banana split. At the end of the year we are going to have real banana splits, and students will get as much of the banana split that they have earned by reading.

I worried at first what to do if there was a student who didn’t participate or only earned the bowl, but so far that hasn’t happened.
