Title – Mother’s Day Card
By – Connie Cornell
Primary Subject – Language Arts
Grade Level – any

This is something that my college professor introduced to us years ago, and I have had success using it at all grade levels. Even the youngest students can remember when they were younger.

Read and discuss the book, “When I Was Young in the Mountains” by Cynthia Rylant.

Note how times have changed and have them brainstorm at least three things they can remember that relates to their mother or another nurturing adult. They put their memories into a card that begins “When I was young, I remember my mother…”. They use this three times (or more) and conclude with a sentence that expresses their gratefulness and/or their love for giving them these memories. (For younger students, I usually have a rose printed on the cover of the card for them to decorate with colored pencils).
