Title – Let Miss Nelson Teach the Rules!
By – Renee Fairchild
Primary Subject – Language Arts
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level – 2-3

During the first week of school, use the book Miss Nelson is Missing by Henry Allard. In the story, the teacher, Miss Nelson, becomes frustrated with her students’ misbehavior. She chooses to come to school the following day dressed as a witch. The book can create many opportunities for discussion about the consequences to inappropriate behavior. It can be used to teach classroom rules and consequences in an enjoyable way.

If you are basing your entire language arts lesson on this story, your spelling list for the week should consist of words from the story (phonetically based or whatever you use to construct a spelling list) plus words from your classroom rules list. These words can also double as your vocabulary words, such as “consequences”, “behavior”, etc. with which students must be familiar. The students will love the story and the teacher can use the events to teach valuable information that will follow them throughout the entire school year and beyond!
