Title – Shared Reading The Emperor and the Kite
By – Debbie Haren
Subject – Language Arts
Grade Level – 2-4

Anticipatory Set

By looking at the title and the cover what country do you think this tale might have come from? What do you think this story might be about? Why? Read the book with the children.

Discussion:

How many children total did the Emperor have? How many boys and how many girls? What was one thing the princess always wanted? If I said ” The meaning of the story is not to underestimate anyone because they are little” What do I mean? How did the princess make the kite strong enough for her father to climb down it? How did the princess keep the emperor alive?

Vocabulary:

What does unyielding mean? What does the author mean when he said He rose and embraced her? What does steely mean? “Holding the kite in his steely hands?” What does plotting mean? “The evil men were plotting against the Emperor”

Writing:

With a partner discuss the ending to this story. Do you feel the ending is a good one? Why? Why not? Do you feel it is fair? Do you feel cheated? Are you left hanging? How would you finish the story? With your partner write a couple pages about how you would end this story. Put both of your names on it and turn it in when you are done.
