Title – Writing a Story

Primary Subject – Language Arts
Secondary Subjects – Science
Grade Level – 2

Learning Objective:

      1) The student will read factual information and include it in their own fictional story.

      2) The student will appropriately use vocabulary words and punctuation in their story.

    3) The student will write a fictional story that is understandable by the reader.

Pre-Activity Preparation:

  • Print and pass out the booklet of information to be used in writing the story.


    Individual work to group reading

Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:

  • Tell students that stories are an important form of entertainment to some people. “How many of you like stories?” So today we are going to write our own stories, so that the class can have something fun to read.

Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:

  1. Pass out the information booklet to each student.
  2. Have the students take out their vocabulary words. Go over the words and their meaning one more time.
  3. Explain to the students about how to use correct punctuation before they begin their story. (Excitement means use one exclamation point…)
  4. Pass out a few sheets of notebook paper to each student. (The story must be at least a full page long!)
  5. Write the prompt on the white board and explain what it means to the students. (Write a fictional story about an adventure in outer space)
  6. Remind the students to read their information packet and to include some facts about space. (The sun is_________ miles away from the earth)
  7. Give the students time to begin working on their story.
  8. Be there to help the students with spelling problems. If it seems like many students are asking for the same word to be spelled, write it on the whiteboard as well.
  9. Allow the student to try ideas aloud to you – give them plenty of encouragement.
  10. When most of the students have finished, let them read their stories to the class.
  11. When all of the students have handed in their papers, have them help you find a spot to hang them on the wall so the class can read them anytime.


  • Ask the students questions like “What did you learn about planets?” Which is the smallest? The largest?”
  • Then ask about the stories themselves like “Were you and your friend’s stories alike? What does that tell you about them?”
