In this lesson, an original “La Rima” is used to teach Spanish prepositions

Materials: A copy of the poem “La Rima” on an overhead, various school supplies (pencils, pens, rulers, calculators), paper cups and wooden tongue depressors, other objects so that the students might describe their locations using prepositions.

Performance Objective: Students will demonstrate knowledge of prepositions using the verb “ESTAR”.

Focus and Review: Review the verb estar in the present tense. Clarify the meaning of a preposition (point out that it contains an English word – position). Ask students to identify some common English prepositions.

Statement of Objectives: Teacher will inform the students that the purpose of today’s lesson is to learn Spanish prepositions.

Teacher Input: Teacher uses her poem “La Rima” to teach the pronunciation of the various prepositions (without the de) while modeling the kinesetic movements that match the prepositions.

Guided Practice:

A) Students will use paper cups and wooden tongue depressors to practice the various prepositions while reciting the poem with the instructor.

B) Students will use a pencil, a ruler, a calculator, a folded piece of paper, and a pen to construct oral sentences using the various prepositions with the verb ESTAR to tell their speaking partner where the various items are located.

Independent Practice:

A) The instructor will stage various items whose Spanish names are known to the students from previously learned vocabulary. The names of these items will be reviewed prior to the students practicing their writing skills using the propositions. The students will construct sentences describing the location of 10 items in relation to other objects using the prepositions and the verb ESTAR.

B) Homework assignment: Draw a room. Describe the relationships between objects using propositions and the verb ESTAR.

Closure: The students will summarize the lesson plan for today in a short paragraph. They will demonstrate their understanding of a preposition in their paragraph. They will copy the poem in their notebooks for a follow-up review.
