Here students examine the punctuation of a message left by a leprechaun

Title – Leprechaun Message

Grade Level – Pre-K

Learning Objectives:

  1. The student will be able to speak the vocabulary words originally taught with little error
  2. The student will be able to identify the difference between periods, question marks, etc. with little or no error.
  3. The student will be able to identify the difference between capitalization, spacing, etc. with little error

List of Materials Needed:

  • White board
  • Gold Coins
  • Green Glitter
  • Black bag to put coins in
  • Dry Erase Markers

Pre-Activity Preparations:

    Sprinkle a glitter path from an open window throughout the room to the classroom door. Turn over chairs. Write a message on the board which includes vocabulary words and punctuation. Put gold coins in black bag; place black bag by or on the door. (See Procedure.)


    The students will see this scene when they walk into the room when they arrive at school. They will then be seated at their squares or assigned seats.

Establishing Set/Motivation/Introduction:

    The disorientation of the room (chairs turned over, glitter around the room, and the message on the board) will get them excited. I will look surprised as well.

Learning Experiences/Presentation/Procedure:

  1. First open a window and sprinkle a glitter path from it to the classroom door. Then write a message and attach the black bag to the door.
  2. The students will walk in and notice the messy room with the glitter path.
  3. Ask them to sit down at their squares.
  4. Teacher will then “notice” the message and say “Look, someone left a message.”
  5. Have your sentence helper come up.
  6. We (all the students) will read aloud the message while the sentence helper points out each word, period, and question mark.
  7. Ask the student, “How do we know there is a new sentence?” “How do we know when a sentence ends?”
  8. Then call students (about nine) to identify and circle certain letters.
  9. The students will sit down at their squares when they are done.
  10. Ask the students (all), “Why do we have a period?” “Why do we have a comma?”
  11. At the end of the message it will say ” I left you a present. ” Then I will give each of them a gold coin from inside the black bag by the door.


    “What is at the end of the sentence?” “Why do we have a comma?” “Why do we have a period?” “How do we know there is a new sentence?”
