Title: The Egyptian Cinderella (a picture book)

Anticipatory Set:

Introduce the story to the class before reading it. Ask the students if they have read other Cinderella stories. If some students answer yes, allow them to retell the story (only if it from another culture). If the students answer no, inform the students that there are at least seven other variations of Cinderella from other parts of the world.

Tell the students a few things about Egypt such as: where it is located (show map), languages spoken, politics, religion etc.

Objective/Purpose:

·          Cultural Awareness

·          Geography

·          Ancient Civilization

·          Vocabulary

·          Comparing and Contrast with the American Cinderella

·          Reading and/or listen to the for Comprehension

·          Writing their own stories

·          Create a graphic response to the story

·          Engage in student-centered, cooperative group work

·          Respond to writing prompts from the teacher

·          Learning the difference between a folk tale a fable, and a picture book.

Instructional Input:

Teacher read the Egyptian Cinderella story out loud to the whole class without any interruptions. After reading, teacher and students will review and define the vocabulary words (from the lesson plan) that are written on the chalkboard:

·          Pharaoh,

·          Papyrus

·          Hieroglyphic

·          pyramids

·          Nile

·          barge

The students reread the story in reading groups. Class discussion will follow.

Modeling:

The teacher will demonstrate using the computer how the students can have their names translated into hieroglyphics. Students will then take turns at the computers. Each student gets a hieroglyphic alphabet sheet.

Checking for understanding:

·          Students will retell the story by writing it in their own words.

·          Students will discuss what they learned about Egyptian Culture.

·          Students will explain the differences between a folk tale a fable, and picture book

Monitoring and Adjusting:

The teacher will evaluate the students’ comprehension through questions, and assessing their own version of the story. If the objective was not met on this day, the teacher will extend the lesson a day or two more. The teacher may change method of teaching as well.

Guided Practice:

The teacher will assist the students with their compare and contrast between the Egyptian and American versions of Cinderella.

Independent Practice:

In-group of three’s, the students will write a Cinderella story.

Closure:

The teacher will reaffirm to the student the aspects of story telling as a means of passing our own culture and values to the next generations.
