Title – Terms Baseball
By – Patti Morin
Primary Subject – Language Arts
Grade Level – 2-5

Elements to Teach: Definitions and symbols

Grade Level: This can be played with every grade level. The terms and symbols would be determined by the students’ age and grade level.

Objectives: The students will:

  • define, name, recognize music symbols and terms
  • recognize patterns
  • create their own flashcards

Materials needed:

  • 4 white cards or masking tape on the floor to represent bases.
  • Flash cards of terms and symbols the students are working on.

Procedures:

  1. Set up the bases.
  2. Take large flash cards of the music symbols being tested.
  3. Discuss what the symbol mean and how they look.
  4. Tell students they can create their own cards. Let them do it.
  5. Choose teams

How to play the game:

The “Batter” is the person who is up. (Only they can answer)
The “Pitcher” is the person holding the cards. (They must be able to answer the card also)

How to get to “run the bases.”

  1. To make it to first base, the student must answer one of the following questions.
    1. What is one correct name for the symbol?
    2. What does the symbol do?
    3. Where do you find this symbol?
  2. To make it to second base, the student must answer two of the following questions.
    1. What is one or two correct name for the symbol? or/and
    2. What does the symbol do? or/and
    3. Where do you find this symbol?
  3. To make it to third base, the student must answer three of the following questions.
    1. What is one, two or three correct names for the symbol? or/and
    2. What does the symbol do? or/and
    3. Where do you find this symbol? or/and
  4. To make a home run you must give four correct responses to any of the following:
    1. What is one, two, three, or four correct names for the symbol? or/and
    2. What does the symbol do? or/and
    3. Where do you find this symbol? or/and

A Strike is earned when the “batter” doesn’t answer correctly and the “pitcher” does.

Evaluation: Students Demonstrate use of terms and symbols

Follow-up: Use terms
