TEKS: 1.5 (C) Identify patterns in related addition and subtraction sentences. Examples: 2+3=5, 3+2=5

Learning Objective(s): After going over 5 “topsy turvey” (commutative property of addition) examples as a class, the learner will be able to complete the worksheet within 15 minutes.

List of Materials Needed:
1. “How many fish in the fishbowl?” worksheets
2. Overhead transparency (Math problems)
3. Overhead Markers

Pre-Activity Preparation:
Overhead Transparency of Topsy Turvey examples

Transition:
I need all desks cleared with everything put away.

Procedure:
Step 1 Motivation/Introduction: I need 5 quiet people to help me do a number sentence
Step 2 Number Sentence – 2 students + 3 students = 5 students (count one by one)
Step 3 Using the same kids – move one to another group
Step 4 New Number Sentence – 3 students + 2 students = 5 students (same answer)
Step 5 Do some overhead examples
Step 6 “How many fish in the fishbowl?” worksheet
Step 7 Closure: Give them another word problem on the overhead. Example: How many sharks are in the ocean? 3 Hammerheads + 5 great whites = ?
