MAIN FOCUS OF LESSON: Recognizing numbers, numerical order and number facts – 1 more, 1 less. Counting on – using visible and invisible objects.
PREVIOUS LEARNING: Counting visible objects, writing numbers.
D.O’S: Mathematical Development: Use mathematical language; count familiar objects; begin to understand less and more; match number to sign and sound.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: Children to recognize numbers 0-10. Children begin to understand doubling numbers. Children to begin to understand counting on.

RESOURCES: Box with some teddies in it, numbered cards, number fans, purse with 20 pennies box worksheet
WORKSHEETS: How many?
VOCABULARY: None, zero to ten, count on, double, altogether, tally marks.
INTRODUCTION: Pair reception with nursery and make sure each pair has a number card between them. Ask the children to show you the cards in response to your questions
EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS: Show me number 1,2,3; Show me the number after 6, before 3; Show me one more than 7, one less than 9; Show me double 2.
MAIN TASK: Show the children the set of toys and the box. Explain that you are going to play a game with the toys and the box. There are four toys in the box, how many are there outside the box? How many are there altogether? How can we work it out? Focus on counting on. Eg. four toys inside the box, two in front. 4. 5,6. Lets check. Stick the box sheet on the whiteboard and draw 4 tally marks inside it. Say 5,6 as you draw the 2 tally marks outside it. Six toys, lets look – take the toys out of the box. 4. 5,6. Repeat with other numbers. Give the children the worksheet to complete.
DIFFERENTIATION: Lower numbers on the first worksheet, if finished, the work gets more challenging
PLENARY: Show the children the purse and the coins. Count 5 coins into the purse and close it. Then show 3 in your hand. Ask How many coins altogether. Repeat.
