Inventing a New Notation System

Pre-requisites: The students should learn how read treble and bass clef as well as know the difference between sixteenth, eighth, quarter, half, and whole notes.

Introduction: It is now the student’s turn to create a new way of reading music. In their new notation system they will create one new “clef”, a series of symbols representing notes for the clef, and a new way of reading different rhythms.

Directions for the students:
1.  Nominate a person in your group to be the secretary. Brainstorm for the first 10 minutes and write down ANY idea your group has for clefs, rhythm, or note symbols.

2.  Name your clefs and be sure to put it on your poster! Also, give a title to your entire notation system!

3.  Create a new way of reading notes for your clef. Your “notes” DO NOT have to be on any staff to be read, but you DO need to create a way to tell the difference between different A’s, B’s and so on. Use as many different shapes, lines, pictures, objects, or any other ideas to represent your system.

4.  Draw the following notes for EACH clef on your poster:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G

5.  You must also create symbols that represent the sharp and flat sign.

6.  Create a key, similar to one on a map, so that any one is able to tell the note each symbol represents. Be sure to include in your key the symbols you have created that represent the sharp and flat sign.

7.  Now, create a rhythm system you can apply to your new clef. You need five different rhythms to represent the whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note. You should be able to only slightly alter the way your note symbols look to add different rhythms.

8.  Create a key stating your rhythm and it’s equivalence to a whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note.

9.  You must also translate the following musical passage into your new notation system. This passage is on the back of the sheet along with one more requirement.
