This is a fun game for you and the students! It is a cross between Hangman and Wheel of Fortune.
1. Divide the class into two groups.
2. Using categories such as Children’s Songs, Christmas Songs, Patriotic Songs, etc., pick a line or two of lyrics. For example, “Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.” from Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star . You then place blanks on the board or overhead corresponding to the lyrics.
3. The teams take turns guessing letters. (Note: In my experience, the students always guess vowels first, so I stepped it up a notch to make it more challenging. I subtract five points when they guess a vowel. Just like you have to pay on Wheel of Fortune to guess vowels.) If the letter they choose is in the puzzle, they get a point for each one. For example, if Team 1 guesses the letter S and there are eight S’s in the puzzle, they get eight points. If there are no S’s, they lose one point.
4. To solve the puzzle: The team that can solve the puzzle first, meaning they can correctly say ALL of the lyrics of the puzzle, gets five points. If they can tell you the name of the song the puzzle comes from, they get another five points. And finally, if they can sing the song the puzzle comes from, they get an additional five points.
My students love this game and I use it as a reward for good behavior!
