Title – Talking Drum Game-
Teaching Rhythm and Movement

Primary Subject – Music
Grade Level – K-3
Objective: This activity gets the kids up and moving about the room while improving their listening skills.
Materials: any size drum, mallet
Instructions: Tell the students to make their feet do what the drum does. If the drum beats a skipping pattern, then the kids skip about the room. If the drum beats a loud pattern, the kids stomp about the room. If the pattern is soft, they tiptoe. They cannot run or bump into each other or they are out. The drum stops at random times and the kids must freeze in place or they are out. The drum pattern can change from soft to loud from slow to fast. The kids love this cause it lets them move about. It is great for teaching rhythm and listening. The kids experience what the rhythm feels like by making their feet do it. It’s also a great filler if you finish the lesson early. I sometimes have my kids come up and be “it” and beat the drum.
