Subjects:

Grades:

Title – March in Time
By – Lars
Primary Subject – Music
Secondary Subjects – Physical Education
Grade Level – K-4

Concept / Topic To Teach: Kids will learn difference between left/right and walk/march in time.

Required Materials: CD of a short march (1:30). I use the White Cockade on the US Marine Band’s Liberty for All CD.

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Have students raise left hands.

Step-By-Step Procedures: Once students can demonstrate raising their left hands, have them stomp their left foot in time.

Next, have them march in a circle in the military fashion of LR-LR.

To help them know the difference between left and right, I have them hold up their left hand. Their hands should all be pointing either outside or inside of the circle.

Once they’ve marched one direction, have them turn around and march the opposite direction.

I use this as a warm up for K-4 grades, before doing any seatwork or other activity.
