“Rhythm Board Race” is a game for teaching Notes and Rests
6, 5, 4, 3
Title – Rhythm Board Race
By – Ellen Krug
Primary Subject – Music
Secondary Subjects – Math
Grade Level – 3-6
Materials: Chalkboard and chalk
1. Have volunteers come to the board and draw the notes and rests you are currently working on with the class. Review how many counts each is worth in common time.
2. Split the class into two teams. I usually come up with a creative title for each team.
3. Have a member of each team come to the board. I then list 3 or 4 notes and rests for the students to draw on the board. When I say “Go!” each student has to put the values for each note and rest underneath. They then add the numbers together. The first student who gets the correct answer circled gets a point for their team.
I take points away from a team who gets too loud. Any answers that are given lose five points from the team who provided them.
The students love and request this game all the time! While a member of the team is at the board, the rest of the team vicariously works out the answer. It’s amazing how quickly they learn note values when they become rules for a game!
