Here’s an idea for keeping your Music students occupied while waiting in line – “Rhythm Telephone”

This is another great way to keep students quiet when lining up.

I tap a rhythm on the shoulder of the person at the end of the line (eg. ta ta ti-ti ta), then they tap it on the shoulder of the person in front of them, and so on until it gets all the way to the front of the line. Then we check and see if the rhythm stayed the same or changed. The goal is for the rhythm to travel through the entire line without changing. You can use more difficult rhythms for older grades and easier for younger. They love when they get it and they are learning to recognize rhythms too!

Hint: After doing this a few times the students tend to fight over being at the back of the line, so I occasionally mix it up and start from the other end.
