Title – Found Sounds

These lessons are designed for two thirty-minute classes. You could combine both days for one hour-long class.
Brainstorm different ways to make sounds (clapping, singing, stomping, whistling, playing different instruments) and then discuss how all sound is made with vibration. Next, tell students that you are going to make vibrations with objects around the room and they will need to listen with their eyes closed. I do things like tear a piece of paper or tap the door handle with a pencil. After each sound have students open their eyes and write down what made the noise. After 10 sounds, let students share what they guessed and listen to what their “wrong” answers sound like, as well as the real sound that you used.
Ask students to remember what they did in class last time and tell them they will be making the vibrations today. Discuss the difference between MUSIC and SOUND and write down differences on the board. My students have come up with ideas like this:

Some of the ideas for music do not fit in every case (i.e. Rap doesn’t have melody, some styles of music might not sound good to some people), but basically music is organized and sound is not. Tell students that they need to compose a song using at least 2 sounds from around the room and it must have a beginning and an end. Give students a quick demo of a song using 2 sounds, then divide the class up into teams of 2 or 3 and let them get to work. I usually give them about 5 minutes. Let each group perform their song and then get together to discuss the notes you wrote about music. Did any of the songs have melody? Did they all have rhythm? Did they all sound good? Talk about the students’ favorite ones.
