Title – Quick context clues paragraph shows students cause and effect of good or poor grades
By – Amber Pinter
Primary Subject – Other
Grade Level – 3 – 5

This is a quick lesson to spur student thought about the effects of their effort in school with how they feel and their relationships with others. (I use this as a first week activity.) The paragraphs can be worked on individually or in small groups.

Hand out the following paragraphs to be completed, giving half of the class #1 and half #2.

Allow students to share their responses.

#1

Instructions: Use context clues to fill in the blanks with a word or phrase to complete the paragraph.

Jason was very excited to talk to his mom after school. He had ____________________ his history test.
Jason spent 45 minutes three nights last week working at ___________________. Because of this test grade, Jason was expecting his history grade to ___________. After seeing Jason’s test, his mom felt Jason should ________________ because she was __________________ him.

#2
