For the holidays, I get cutouts for the appropriate holiday (pumpkins-Halloween, turkeys-Thanksgiving, etc.)
and I write letters on them and then laminate them. The letters make up the letters needed to spell out that holiday. I have enough sets for relay teams. The holiday shapes are at the other end of the gym and each team votes on one team member to be the “secretary”. The secretary’s job is to keep order. On the go signal, the first person on each team races down, gets a holiday shape (with a letter on it), brings it back to the secretary. The secretary arranges the letters to spell out the holiday. If they already have that letter, they give the letter back and the next person in line must return it and get a different letter. The letters are all face down (except in the first grade). The first team to spell out the holiday correctly wins the race. Teamwork, cooperation and communication, as well as spelling and letter recognition, are necessary. The kids love it and want to play even when the holiday has passed. I suppose you could do this with any words, like spelling words from their teachers. This would just take more preparation.
