This is a good idea for a beginning of the school year review in any subject

Title – Beginning of the Year Review

This lesson could be used for ANY subject area being taught the first few days of school.
Each student writes the alphabet down the long side of their paper. The student goes back to the first letter (A) and writes something that they know about that subject that begins with the letter “A” (for example: in music, they may want to write “andante”). Then they proceed through the rest of the alphabet until they get to Z. If they cannot think of anything to put beside a letter, encourage them to think real hard, but do not push it. The class will then be divided into small groups. Each group will look at each other’s list and add names beside the letters that they do not already have written on the paper. Then the groups will be paired with other groups and they will “network” some more and add even more words. AND……….the students ARE NOT to talk when they do this!!! You may even want to award a prize to the group of students (or student) who has the most words.
The teacher can then put the list of words on the board for the class to see.
This is a great way to network with others and to find out what the students already know about the subject being taught. It also gets the students up and moving and is an “ice breaker” for the first day of class.
