Title – Hopping Equations

By – Victoria Ovitt

Primary Subject – Health / Physical Education

Secondary Subjects – Math

Grade Level – 2-5

Each students gets a hula hoop and gets into personal space. The teacher begins to give math equations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). The students are suppose to hop inside of their hula hoop the number of the answer once they have figured it out. The teacher can modify the lesson with equations that are either easier or more difficult. Other modifications include jumping or leaping into the hula hoop. Also, students can hop/jump/leap etc. in and out of the hoop, or around it. The teacher can also use such ideas as even and odd numbers. The teacher can check for answers by counting the number of times the students hop inside of the hula hoop. Once students are becoming proficient at hopping, the answers to the equations can become higher numbers in order to increase physical activity.
