   GRADE 4
LESSON PLAN #1
created by RICHARD HAMILTON
TOPIC:
Rocks
	PURPOSE:

Identify similarities and differences of various types of rocks.

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Classify rocks through observation of similarities and differences in shape, size, colour, texture and hardness.

2. Collect different types of rocks. The rocks are raw data.

3. Use a dictionary to discover the proper spelling of the names of the rocks.

GROUPING:

There will be groups of 3 or 4 throughout the lesson. There will be no individual work. The groups should be heterogeneous.

INTRODUCTION:

I would introduce the unit by showing examples of different and interesting rocks I collected. I would tell the students I found these rocks around the school.

ASSESSMENT:

I would assess the students with a checklist, observation and with a grand conversation (discussion). The checklist would be used to ensure the groups gathered a variety of rocks. Observation would be used to ensure group members were participating equally. The discussion would be used to see if the students were understanding the difference and similarities of rocks.

RESOURCES:

-book on rocks with illustrations of various types

-various types of rocks (different sizes, shapes, color, texture and hardness)

-begin grand conversation about rocks

-mention how some are different colors and shapes

-remind students about safety issues when outside

-when outside circulate among groups and answer any questions regarding rocks

-stay outside for 20-30 minutes

-ask the students to put their pails of rocks in an out of the way area

-display your original examples, pronounce the names several times

-ask the students to find the correct spelling to the rocks in a dictionary and write the proper spelling down in a group log
