I would start with a poster of pictures of plants in the ocean from National Geographics or a book of plants in the oceans. Explain about what a Reef is and how it is food and shelter for many animals in the ocean. Coral reefs are living animals that provide shelter and places for small fish to breed and lay their eggs that provides protection from predators. Another plant is kelp. Kelp is the very large green plants that live on the bo5tem of the ocean that do not need hardly any light to survive. Kelp is used in some ice creams to help bind it together. There are also many types of Algae that grow on the bottom of the ocean and is a food source for many small fish. An activity to do to start this unit is to take a large piece of butcher block paper and paint it bluish green and paint in a coral reef and many kelp plants. Label these plants and beside them writ a brief statement about what they are and how they are important in the ocean. Write this information on blue or green colored file cards and tape each beside the appropriate plants.
