This piece of the Ocean unit is about the types of instruments needed to take a ship or boat out onto the ocean. What types of inventions were needed to make it possible to sail the ocean without getting lost? Such instruments are the compass, maps, the legends on a map. Discuss with your students how to read a map and how sailors would plot their course for their entire trip. Ask students if anyone in their family sails a boat and see if that that person could come in and talk to the class. It would be fantastic to have some hands on equipment to show the children or take them top a field trip to an zoo or nautical museum and show the students different types of ships and ocean life for real. The teacher could research their particular area that they live in to see what is available to visit and have that as an ending to their unit. By the time the children go on their field trip they will know so much about that topic that it will be a very fulfilling and educational experience for them to actually see what they have been studying. Even if the teacher does decide to do a field trip I stronlgy suggest finding someone in the community that knows how to operate a motor boat and discuss with them in the classroom the different instruments used to navigate the ocean.
