This World War I lesson includes an art project

Title – U.S. Involvement in WWI, Wilson’s Fourteen Points, and Propaganda

Lesson Length – 90 minutes

Content Standards:


        The student will demonstrate an understanding of foreign developments that contributed to the United States’ emergence as a world power in the 20th century



      The student will outline the causes and course of WWI, focusing on the involvement of the U.S. including the effects of nationalism, ethnic and ideological conflicts, and Woodrow Wilson’s leadership in the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations.

Goal or Purpose:

  • The students will be able to determine the importance of U.S. involvement in WWI and how that impacted the world.
  • The students will also be able to identify the effects of patriotism and ethnic and ideological conflicts.

Instructional Objective(s):

  • The students will identify the historical significance of Wilson’s 14 points.
  • They will map and determine the allied system previous to and during WWI.
  • They will describe the importance of propaganda in the war.
  • They will establish ethnic and nationalistic controversy within a piece of propaganda.

Materials and Resources:

  • PowerPoint presentation on WWI
  • Map for the students to color in alliance system
  • Copy of Wilson’s 14 Points for each group
  • Quote for students to reflect upon when entering the classroom
  • Read-aloud source (example: song about patriotism – Major Problems in American History , pg. 143)
  • Supplies for propaganda posters

Procedures and Activities:

  • As students enter classroom, they will reflect on the quote on the board
  • Read-aloud
  • An explanation from the teacher about the causes of WWI.
    • Explanation of countries involved
    • Fill-in maps
    • U.S. involvement
  • Split students into groups of three or four and distribute Wilson’s 14 Points. Students must answer:
    • Why would Wilson include this point?
    • Do you think it was necessary?
    • Does history prove it was necessary?
    • How did other countries respond?
  • Show examples of propaganda in WWI and explain why they were significant.
    • Students will create their own propaganda posters for WWI
    • They must include ethnic and nationalistic biases depending on what country they are creating propaganda for


  • The responses made by the students from their group work.
  • Also, the propaganda project they will turn in.
