Lesson #4 Whale Hunting
Have the children get on the computers and look up on the internet “whaling.”
Have them find out 5 facts about whaling in Alaska.
Then have them share their facts with each other in other groups.
Next have them find 5 facts about how they use the parts of the whales.
Then have them share this information with other groups. In each group they need to have someone who write down the information. This can be the secretary of the group. Ask them if they can find out what Eskimos call the big boats they use for whaling. (Umiak) Ask them to find out what the word Alaska means.
What is the name for a 1 person boat? (Kayak)
Have each group pick a new word that they have learned and draw a picture of what the word means. Then on a separate piece of paper have them write the word. Pass these around and have each group try to get all the pictures and words matched correctly. Here are some examples of the words you might have…
Parka
Mukluk
Kayak
Umiak
Whaling
Ermine
Alaska = Great Land
Dog sled
Inuit
Keep these out in the classroom so when children are done with assignment they can go over and play the matching game themselves.
HAVE FUN!!
