Grade Level – 1-3
Objectives:
— This project will be a culmination activity for the unit.
— Students will write a one-page essay using information gathered from our unit. Possible topics included: “I’ll never forget the day I got by pilot’s license.” “A day in the life of a pilot/flight attendant/flight crew person.” Or News reporter for a day about a dog fight/plane flight.

Subject Area(s): social studies, language arts

Materials:
— Books related to the topic of flight (see attached)
— Note cards for recording information
— Pencils
— Paper for writing
— Internet

Procedure:
— Since this is the culminating activity students should be aware of resources that they may use.
— Give them the assignment to write a one-page essay using one of the above ideas or an idea of their own (must be approved).
— The students will be given several class periods to work on this. Suggested steps:
— Review research and note-taking
— Go to library and research and take notes
— Compile information
— Write outline or rough draft
— Have a friend read it
— Revise and rewrite
— Have teacher read it
— Revise and edit
— Publish final copy
— The students will share their work with the rest of the class using the authors chair

Assessment:
— Each step will be assessed for participation. One point will be earned for each step that is completed.
— The final copy will be checked for spelling, punctuation, grammar and clarity. One point will be deducted for each error.
