“Our Veterans Wall” is an idea that originated with “Dear Abbey”

Title – Our Veterans Wall

Primary Subject – Social Studies
Grade Level – 3-8
This is a brief activity to introduce the importance of remembering our veterans. This can be a simple one-day lesson or you can turn it into a lengthy assignment with modifications of your own. I cannot take credit for this activity. I saw it printed in a Dear Abbey column in the Elyria, Ohio, Chronicle Telegram daily newspaper.
After discussing Veteran’s Day and importance thereof, I ask if any of the students have or has someone serving in the armed forces. I hand out large stars (about 6″ by 6″) made out of construction paper in colors of red, white and blue. The students are to interview (if possible) their veteran and write down on the star:
- Name of veteran
- Branch of service
- Location of service
- Any other pertinent information.
If they cannot interview the veteran because they are now serving or have passed on, they can interview a family member who can tell them about that person’s service to our country. We then hang the stars on our “Veteran Wall.”
